Rome is a fabulous city and is the epitome of the historic beauty of Europe. It was the capital of the massive Roman empire and has enjoyed an almost mythical status for many centuries.
Today’s Rome, although much different than it was at the pinnacle of the Roman empire, still preserves its rich Roman heritage (fortunately for us). So while in Rome, consider staying in the historic part of Rome to completely immerse yourself into everything Rome has to offer. Remember, Rome is a big city, and it is best explored on foot, so staying at a Sheraton or a chain will not help you as a tourist. It is far from where the historic part of Rome is and a cab right each way will run you anywhere from 25 to 40 euros. So, consider staying at a local bed and breakfast, even though you may have to skimp on basic hotel ammenties like an in-room bathroom and room service.
So for the average visitor to Rome, here is my list of places to see and things to do while in Rome.
